What is Anchorsaway?

Anchorsaway is a college-level Christian worldview educational experience targeting high school seniors and college students.  The purpose is to encourage student's biblical and spiritual growth and to equip him/her to confidently live out their faith in every area of life.

Goal

To encourage students and adults to live passionately, walk Christianly, and love others unconditionally to the glory of God.

Our Strategy

Anchorsaway is a partnering ministry accomplishing our goal by uniting churches and para-church organizations and mobilizing interested Christian adults within the community. Adults come together to personally teach, mentor and coach high school seniors and college students as they prepare for culture-shaping influence in college or the workplace and beyond.

Our Structure

We encourage all groups to be taught by well grounded Christian communicators and to meet outside of the church and school grounds. Classes work best as a community activity and outreach, not an extension of one youth group alone, but rather a mix of churches, schools, backgrounds, races, sexes, believers, seekers and anything in between.

We suggest that classes begin in January and continue through the end of April. That is the time when high school seniors are becoming focused toward college or the workforce and thinking about what it will be like to leave home. As Anchorsaway expands, groups are finding other times that work best for them, such as starting summer groups to catch students before they leave or when they are home from college. The best time to hold an Anchorsaway group is when students are available to come!

Small groups are an essential part of the evening. Leaders will meet with a small group of students to unpack the nights lesson, contact them during the week, and continue to stay in contact with them throughout the student’s college experience.

Our Expectations

We expect Anchorsaway graduates to make a difference for Christ wherever they go. We are hoping that in their wake, many will come into a personal relationship with Christ, many will be taught or disciplined and consequently, our culture would forever be impacted.

  • Learn the foundations of the Christian faith
  • Live out their faith in all of life
  • Listen to others
  • Love unconditionally
  • Lead others to an authentic faith in Jesus Christ

Why the name Anchorsaway?

It is a play on the Navy’s use of the words, “anchors aweigh.” According to the naval tradition, the word “weigh” in this sense comes from the archaic word meaning to heave, hoist or raise. It means that that action has been completed. The anchor is aweigh when it is pulled from the bottom. This event is duly noted in the ship’s log. When students have completed the Anchorsaway program, their anchors are raised (Anchors Aweigh!), their sail is set, and God navigates their boat to the point of His choosing.
